Part of the chocolate hills in Bohol was burned Tuesday night due to a grassfire, it took three hours before the fire was completely extinguished in two hills in the part of Carmen town.
The Bureau of Fire Protection believes that the dry leaves in the area may have caught fire due to the hot weather, especially since the heat index hit 41°C in Bohol. No one was injured in the fire and no residential area was affected.
The responders waited for the fire to go out while keeping an eye on surrounding hills to make sure it wouldn't be affected because it was getting dark and a BFP-Carmen firetruck couldn't get into the area.
The grassfire occurred about 7 p.m., according to FO3 Ian Blair Reyes, team leader of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Carmen. It spread rapidly since the hot weather had made the grass covering the hills dried out.
Cone-shaped mound clusters are dispersed throughout the towns of Sagbayan, Carmen, and Sierra Bullones. During the rainy season, the over 1,700 hills are covered in greenery. The term "Chocolate Hills" comes from the fact that the grass covering the hills turns brown in the summertime heat, giving the impression that the hills are made of chocolate drops.
Based on BFP statistics, it appears that this was not the first time that a grassfire affected Chocolate Hills, a week ago the municipality of Sierra Bullones just next to Carmen, had also a grass fire incident, which is regarded as the tourism trademark of Bohol.
