Early Tuesday morning (November 05), establishments were damaged as fire hits in the Commonwealth Market in Quezon City, the Bureau of Fire Protection reported.
According to the BFP-National Capital Region (NCR), the fire broke out at 2:45 a.m. and the blaze reached the first alarm at 2:37 a.m. and the second alarm by 3 a.m.
Firefighters said it was under control at 7:43 a.m. and declared fire out at 10:16 AM. The fire reached second alarm where at least 40 firetrucks and fire volunteers responded to the scene.
Quezon City Fire Inspector Fire Chief Inspector Marvin Mari said that the fire started from the basement of the market where different products were stored including grocery items. Among the challenges in their response were locked stalls, vendors trying to save some goods, and the far location of the fire hydrant.
Establishments was destroyed in several places at the Market, no one was killed or injured in the incident, but about 100 stores were affected by the fire. All rice, oil, plastic, condiments and other dry goods were burned.
"If we can see that the contents of the market are more on oil, soy sauce, vinegar, condiments, that's why we had a little difficulty in extinguishing the fire. Another thing here is the distance of the hydrant that we are still going around the Commonwealth and then back. at the roundabout before coming back and it was rush hour so it took us a while to get under control," Mari said.
Almost four hours was spent by the firefighters extinguishing the fire that broke out in the Riverside of the Commonwealth Market where smoke was dark and thick coming from the burning part of the market.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) continues to investigate the cause of the fire and the amount of property damage. According to the leadership of the Commonwealth Market, they will meet all the stall owners and tenants to find out what help the affected victims need.
