A fire engulfed almost 60 families in Manila, the residents of Barangay 58 in Tondo Manila ran outside their houses and took a live video to call for help for the fire that broke out past 10 p.m. on Sunday.
It is said that the Sangguniang Barangay officials in the area had just finished playing and were closing the gate of the basketball court when they saw the third floor of a home in the area on fire. They said they immediately got a fire extinguisher but were unable to put out the fire immediately.
According to Fire Inspector Ronald Lim, Station 1 commander of the Manila BFP, the fire escalated to the second alarm before it was finally extinguished at 2:00 a.m. Monday.
Fire volunteers had a hard time extinguishing the fire because resident’s we’re panicking on saving their belongings. The residents would have blocked the way. While some residents were also unable to save their belongings.
Even though it was raining, the firefighters still had a hard time putting out the fire because of the small roads in the area and the number of people inside.
"Mostly the houses are light materials. The rain didn't help either. The small road became a challenge for us, only an alley to enter, and our big trucks couldn't enter right away. Then with the number of people inside," said Lim.
It took two o'clock in the morning on Monday before the fire was completely extinguished. A total of 20 houses were burned while 60 families were affected. The value of the damaged property will reach P1.6 million.
Three fire volunteers were injured while responding. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is still investigating what caused the fire, but residents suspect that it started from a house whose electricity was cut and a candle was used and it was neglected.
