In a survey released by the  Social Weather Stations (SWS), around 16 million or 58 percent Filipino families rate themselves as poor in June 2024 which was 12 percent higher (12.9 million) in March 2024.

The highest self-rated poverty level was recorded in year 2008 which was 59% according to the pollster. The latest survey result found that 12% said that they were borderline (between poor and not poor), while 30% rated themselves as not poor.

Self-rated poverty was highest in Mindanao at 71% from 56% in March, the Visayas region reported a self-rated poverty rate of 67%. Followed by Balance Luzon with self-rated poverty increasing from 38% in March to 52% in June, and Metro Manila had the lowest at 39%.

Among the self-rated poor, 46% saw themselves poor based on the food they consumed in June 2024, 15% were food-borderline, and 39% did not consider themselves food-poor.

Families that self-rated as poor stated that in order to not be considered poor, they required a monthly budget of at least P15,000. According to SWS, the self-rated poverty threshold has not changed over the previous ten quarters.

The median monthly family expenses were reported to be P3,000 for house rent, P2,000 for transportation to and from work and school, P900 for internet, and P360 for mobile phone load.

SWS conducted the latest survey from June 23 to July 1 using face-to-face interviews among 1,500 adults (18 years old and above) 600 in Balance Luzon (or Luzon outside Metro Manila) and 300 each in Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao.

"To arrive at the estimated numbers of Self-Rated Poor families, the percentage of respondent households rating themselves as poor was applied to the Philippine Statistics Authority medium-population projections for 2024 and 2023, respectively," the SWS stated.
