Few months before the private firm San Miguel Corporation take over the airport operation at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said that passengers can expect an increase on the terminal fee up to P950 by next year.
According to DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, as the massive P170.6-billion rehabilitation project led by San Miguel Corporation and set to begin in September this year for the Philippines' main gateway, the terminal fee may go up to P950 from the current P200 terminal fee at NAIA for domestic travelers and P550 for international travelers.
He added that in accordance with Administrative Order 1, proposed increases in the takeoff and landing fees, as well as the passenger service charge, terminal fee, are still subject to Cabinet approval.
The secretary stated that the last increase in the terminal fee occurred 24 years ago. So it is said that it is time because it is necessary to implement reform and modernization at the airport.
"We need to compensate the concessionaire there for their investments. But with the investments that they will do, the charges that they will collect, the efficiency of the airport will improve from 32 million capacity now, it will be 60 to 62 million. That would mean a more comfortable, better experience for the passengers,” Bautista said.
Meanwhile, airport fees that airlines pay, like landing and takeoff charges, will increase sooner instead of later this year. This will be reviewed as well. According to the airlines they might be surprised of the sudden increase so they will review it with the cabinet.
