The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced on Friday that the El Niño phenomenon has ended, that cause disaster on agricultural lands and fishing over the past months and its impact could continue in some parts of the country.
“DOST (Department of Science and Technology)-Pagasa announces the end of El Niño, as the conditions in the tropical Pacific have returned to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-neutral levels. Moreover, a transition from ENSO-neutral to La Niña remains likely (about 69% chance) by July-August-September 2024 season,” Pagasa said in a statement.
Pagasa climate monitoring and prediction section chief Ana Liza Solis said that there would still be remnants of El Niño effects possibly in western portions of Luzon and the Visayas despite the tropical part of the Pacific Ocean returned to normal.
“We will still experience, especially these last few days, hot temperatures and high humidity. Also, there are still areas, based on our assessment at the end of May, that will face drought conditions and dry spell conditions,” Solis stated.
El Niño phenomenon is a “large-scale oceanographic/meteorological phenomenon that develops in the Pacific Ocean and is associated with extreme climatic variability” such as devastating rains, winds, and drought according to Pagasa.
The weather state bureau encouraged all concerned agencies and the public to monitor and take precautionary measures against impending climate impacts. The DOST-Pagasa will continue to closely monitor any significant developments in the climate phenomenon.
