The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said that the Philippine government would undertake major infrastructure projects this year, including the long-awaited rehabilitation of the country’s busiest thoroughfare EDSA.
According to DPWH Secretary Manny Bonoan the rehabilitation of the entire stretch of EDSA was under the directive of President Marcos Jr. to “improve the riding quality of EDSA.”
Currently plagued by traffic congestion and uneven road conditions, EDSA’s overhaul aims to address long-standing issues with the highway as well as enhance the overall commuting experience for millions of Filipinos.
DPWH said the rehabilitation project will be 'done in segments' which includes “replace the damaged sections with new concrete and then afterwards, we will lay down asphalt totally and we will also do drainage.”
Bonoan assured the public that the rehabilitation would not lead to the temporary closure of the whole EDSA, however, the agency asked for the public to extend its patience on whatever inconvenience the road works might cause, and assured that the rehabilitation would be for the best in the long run.
P7 billion was allocated for the budget of the rehabilitation project from its 2025 budget, but it clarified that the P7 billion budget is not yet the complete budget for the rehabilitation since they would also allot to it a portion of DPWH's 2026 budget.
Among the projects set this year is the 32-kilometer Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge, 13-km Panay-Guimaras-Negros Link bridge and the 47-km-long lakeshore expressway from Calamba in Laguna to Sucat in Parañaque (Laguna Lakeshore Expressway).
“All these projects are under official development assistance, so we are assured of the financing program on these bridges,” Bonoan said.
