DOH DECLARES CODE WHITE ALERT NATIONWIDE AGAINST LEPTOSPIROSIS

The Department of Health (DOH) has declared a Code White Alert nationwide this Wednesday with the incessant rains due to strong southwest monsoon and Typhoon Carina against the threat of leptospirosis.
Health units will be conducting proactive reporting and monitoring of any health incidents following the floods in many parts of Metro Manila and neighboring provinces according to the DOH.
The alert was raised in Centers for Health Development in all regions, also in the Ministry of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Code White Alerts refers to the readiness of medical personnel in hospitals and health offices to provide or respond to necessary health services. Under the alert, all units must monitor and report any untoward health incidents to the DOH.
Leptospirosis can be get by wading through floods, infected animal urine like rodents could mix with flood water during heavy rains which is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted to human body.
DOH advised to, “Stay away from floods and mud to avoid leptospirosis. For those who have to do so, use knee-high boots. Wash the affected area immediately with clean water and soap. Consult a doctor immediately, don’t be complacent because the symptoms take a long time to appear.”
Among the regions in the country that DOH recorded the highest number of leptospirosis cases is in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Caraga, Socckskargen, Western Visayas, Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) Eastern Visayas, and Northern Mindanao. With 133 deaths as of July 13, 2024.
