Almost every day there are road accidents recorded in different parts of the country, and according to the Department of Health an average of 12,000 Filipinos were killed yearly due to vehicle mishaps like collision or pedestrians hit by speeding vehicles.

“On average, 12,000 Filipinos die in car crashes, or when a pedestrian gets hit while crossing the street, or when the accident involves motorcycles, tricycles and bicycles. We are all vulnerable road users,” Domingo said.

DOH Spokesperson Albert Domingo stated in commemoration of Road Safety Month stated that the agency seeks to raise and improve awareness, knowledge and understanding, and attitude through road safety.

From 5,938 to 11,096, the road incidents deaths increased in the country where 84% are male. In the Philippines, road accidents are a major cause in the deaths of children. While worldwide, road traffic deaths rank 8 among top causes of death.

The department aims to lessen to 35% the deaths by 2028 by road safety plan due to road mishap and urges Filipinos to choose active transportation (walk or ride instead of riding a vehicle) if the destination is just near or if there’s enough shade from the sun on the streets.

The objective of Philippine Road Safety Action Plan at Inter-Agency Technical Working group on active transport is expected to improved safety management and faster post-crash emergency to victims of road accidents, among others.

“That was one of the silver linings of the pandemic. Many chose to ride bicycles so more Filipinos chose healthy lifestyles and avoided traffic jams. Our vision is a Philippine society with zero deaths on the road,” Domingo said.

“The DOH wants to improve our awareness, understanding and attitude of our countrymen toward road safety, and to improve our state of health by choosing active transport,” he added.
