DISPOSAL OF FIRECRACKERS ACCIDENTALY EXPLODE, 27 INJURED

Several individuals were injured after the confiscated pyrotechnics and firecrackers in Zamboanga exploded. On June 29, a warehouse in Barangay Tetuan exploded and causes fire where five individuals were killed and 38 were injured and caused a wide damage on the property.
Authorities were trying to destroy the confiscated firecrackers and pyrotechnics in an open field in Barangay Cabatangan in Zamboanga, when there was an accidental blast hurting 27 persons.
According to the Zamboanga City Police, the victims include eight civilians, six police bomb disposal experts, five members of the Philippine Marine Corps, five Bureau of Fire Protection personnel, and three Philippine Coast Guard members.
Based on the report, two of the victims were in critical condition while four were severely wounded. Other victims sustained minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital. The explosion also caused damage to several PNP-owned vehicles and a firetruck.
The explosion also resulted in minor damage to Zamboanga International Airport which is 2 meters away from the explosion that slightly damaged the check-in area of the Passenger Terminal Building.
No passengers were affected and no flight delays were recorded, after a thorough inspection, normal operations continue at the airport according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
The explosions have prompted calls for the local government to reconsider its business licensing regulations and consider prohibiting the use and sale of fireworks in the city.
