President Bongbong Marcos led the first phase of the program that will speed up internet connectivity in the country. This is the National Fiber Backbone project of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which is expected to provide 600 GB per seconds of bandwidth
So far, 14 provinces in Northern and Central Luzon, two national government data centers, and four economic zones will benefit from it. It will also speed up connection to nearly 400 government offices and help more than 700,000 individuals.
“This is the infrastructure that will open employment opportunities, improve market efficiency, attract foreign investment, and stimulate livelihood across the different sectors of our economy and our society. It will close the digital divide and bring to our people the transformative power of free and fast access to information,” Marcos stated.
The NFB project is a big help for medium, small, and micro enterprises to promote their businesses and enter the digital world according to the President. The program covers 28,000 kilometers of fiber connecting the Islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
“I call upon everyone involved in this mega project to remain committed to our original vision, to bring our businesses closer to consumers, our nation closer to the rest of the world, and our people closer to our loved ones,” said Marcos.
Phases 2 and 3 of the project, in particular, will expand the network's reach by providing longer connectivity across different parts of the nation and expanding broadband internet access to public areas and government buildings.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology's National Broadband Plan, which intends to accelerate the development of fiber optic cable and wireless technologies to increase internet speed and affordability, includes the NFB Program as a key component.
Marcos expressed hope that the five remaining NFB Project stages would be finished by 2026, allowing more Filipinos, particularly those living in distant locations, to "enjoy the benefits of having modern and state-of-the-art connections."
