The Department of Education is targeting to reduce the number of subjects in the senior high school (SHS) curriculum to boost the students' chances of getting hired by employers. “We must have flexibility in our system.”
Education Secretary Sonny Angara said that DepEdis set to fast-track the review of the curriculum for SHS, allowing learners to focus more on work immersion. It aims to reduce the core subjects of the SHS curriculum to five or six.
“If we reduce the subjects of our SHS curriculum, the students will have more time for the on-the-job training or work immersion needed by the industry so that our senior high school graduates will become more employable even if they lack work experience,” Angara said.
According to DepEd, SHS students are currently required to take 15 core subjects. The curriculum review for Grades 11 to 12, or senior high school, is underway, while the revamped K to 10 curriculum which focuses on literacy and math skills is being implemented in phases until 2028.
DepEd met with academic experts to accelerate efforts in reviewing and streamlining the SHS program and subjects. Which included consultants from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) sought to provide recommendations and professional guidance to education specialists.
Under its former chief Vice President Sara Duterte, earlier said it was eyeing to implement the revised SHS curriculum in 2025 which aims to produce more job-ready and responsible graduates.
DepEd also cut down the number of subjects, with greater emphasis given on the development of Kinder to Grade 3 learners' foundational skills such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills.
