Number of dengue cases logged in the Philippines have increased based on the latest data from the Department of Health (DOH). In the first half of August, more than 36,000 people were infected with the dengue virus and the number of fatalities rose to 546 this year.
The health department said, from August 4 to 17 a total of 36,335 dengue cases were logged which was 25 percent higher than the 29,021 reported from July 21 to August 3. As of September 6, 2024 the disease surged to 208,965, 68 percent increase from the same period last year.
The DOH also said all regions in the country except Mimaropa, Bicol, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao recorded an increase from August 4 to August 17.
In Tagum City Davao del Norte, 70 new cases of dengue have been recorded in just one week from September 1 to 7, 2024. Barangay Visayan Village has the most cases with 240, followed by Mankilam with 211, and Apokon with 195.
“We are witnessing a continued and seasonal rise in dengue cases. It is crucial that we take immediate and concerted action to address this situation brought about by the rainy season,” Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said in a statement.
"A smaller proportion of case deaths may be attributed to better health seeking behavior and also management at hospitals. Let us work together to protect our families, friends, and communities from the dangers of dengue," he added.
The public are urged to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, use insect repellent and protective clothing, seek early medical consultation for symptoms, and support fogging or spraying in hotspot areas.
The agency added that it was monitoring the situation closely and working with local governments to implement targeted interventions in affected areas.
