According to the Department of Health, 568 cases of pertussis were reported as of March 16, 40 deaths have been recorded, a large number of pertussis are infants. According to the DOH, the agency advises not to carry the baby without a face mask and also avoid taking them to crowded places, immediately take to the doctor if coughing.
“The medical field has known pertussis for a long time now. We have antibiotics that can treat it. Vaccines are safe and effective against whooping cough. The DOH is redistributing on-hand doses to where they are needed the most,” Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said.
The National Task Force against COVID-19's former special adviser, Dr. Tony Leachon, predicted that the free movement of people during Holy Week vacation will lead to a spike in pertussis cases in the coming three weeks, especially in places outside of Metro Manila.
He suggested that places like Cavite Province, Quezon City, and Iloilo City, where there has previously been a declared outbreak, as well as those with a high number of reported cases of pertussis, should be required to have face masks on. Most of the youngsters it has infected are unvaccinated.
