Long-time governor of Cavite Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla Jr. was appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the new secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) as he took his oath before the President on Tuesday.
Remulla will replace Benhur Abalos who was deemed resigned after formalizing his bid for a Senate seat in the May 2025 elections. Remulla served in the local government of Cavite for nearly 3 decades, including nearly 12 years as governor.
As governor, Remulla ensured equitable health and social services, relevant quality education, socialized housing units, peace and order, and a disaster-resilient community in Cavite. In a social media post, Remulla said he is accepting the challenge to be the head of the DILG. He also mentioned that there are still many problems but the solution is ready.
“Ito po ay aking buong pusong tinanggap upang makatulong di lamang sa ating lalawigan kundi para na din sa buong Pilipinas. Ang aking adhikain mula noon pa man ay ang ipagtibay ang kakayahan ng lokal na pamahalaan at kapulisan para maging pantay ang karapatan ng lahat at tungo sa mas mabuting kinabukasan.”
Remulla also asked for prayers, and hoped that his constituents would still accept him should he decide to return to an elective post in the future. “Being Governor is the only job I ever wanted. Serving all of you has given me immense joy and fulfillment. An honor of a lifetime.”
Following Remulla's appointment to the DILG, Vice Governor Athena Bryana Delgado Tolentino is now the governor of Cavite province. Tolentino was a former city councilor of Tagaytay City, and she took her oath as the new Cavite governor on Tuesday, October 8.
Tolentino is the daughter of Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman and Tagaytay Mayor Abraham Tolentino and the niece of Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino. At 26, Tolentino is one of the youngest public servants in the country and the first female vice governor and now the first female governor of Cavite.
