Miss Universe 2018 titleholder Catriona Gray has won the libel and cyber libel cases she filed against a showbiz editor and writer in 2020 according to her legal counsel Atty. Joji Alonso shared in an Instagram post.
Alonso shared some photos with a caption, “Finally after four years, the Libel and Cyber Libel cases filed by Miss Universe 2018 @catriona_gray have been resolved.”
"Thank you Cat (Gray's nickname) for the trust you have reposed on us. The journey was not an easy tread but it is all worth it... This is not just a judicial win but a moral victory!" Alonso added.
The Fil-Australian beauty queen has filed a case against Bulgar's editor Janice Navida and reporter Melba Llanera in 2020 after a fake topless photo of her was released by Bulgar and circulated online.
In 2020, Alonso released a statement slamming the alleged topless photo of Gray that made the rounds online and "a certain tabloid" that was releasing it. And clarified to the public “that the photo is fake and digitally altered.”
Gray filed a formal complaint following the issue and sought help from the National Bureau of Investigation to identify the individuals behind the photo, she also demanded a public apology from Bulgar and P10 million in legal damages.
Addressing the issue, Navida said they did their part in protecting Catriona by blurring the photo and "not releasing the original." She further said that their intention was to "inform the readers" about individuals spreading the obscene photo.
The lawyer said the writer and editor were "found guilty beyond reasonable doubt" of libel under Art. 355 of the Revised Penal Code and were sentenced to imprisonment.
