Starting September 14 (Saturday), the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) will no longer have cash lanes or 100% cashless toll collection at its toll plazas will be implemented. Motorists are advised to install and use the radio frequency identification device or RFID.
According to the operator of the expressway PEA Tollway Corp., the Parañaque (R1 Expressway) and Kawit (R1 Extension Expressway) toll plazas cash lanes in CAVITEX will be removed. CAVITEX plays a crucial role in linking Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog, is managed by the PEATC - a subsidiary of the Philippine Reclamation Authority serves as the government partner of the Pangilinan-led Cavitex Infrastructure Corp.
The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) is conducting a series of trials for contactless payments in toll gates as it hopes to enforce 100 percent RFID within the year. Motorists passing through the toll plazas without an RFID or have insufficient load will be fined starting October 1.
Motorists with no RFID stickers and using tampered or fake RFID device will be fined P1,000 for the first offense, P2,000 for the second offense, and P5,000 for subsequent offenses. If its balance is insufficient, a fine of P500 will be imposed for the first offense, P1,000 for the second offense, and P2,500 for subsequent offenses.
For the meantime, motorists without an RFID will be directed to the side of the road where they can pay their fees in cash and have their vehicles installed with an RFID.
The implementation of cashless toll collection and fines “is to promote responsible use and encourage the proper use of RFID along our expressways. Intends to achieve a smoother and faster flow of traffic at the toll plazas, thereby saving time, money and resources.” Also, to avoid unnecessary delays and long queues at the toll plazas.
