More than 40 individuals suffered from injury when the hanging bridge in the town of Alfonso Castañeda in Nueva Vizcaya collapsed. The students and teachers of Abuyo National High School were heading to the other barangay for their intramurals when the incident happened.
91 students and seven teachers passed through the bridge at the same time that the hanging bridge collapsed. The said bridge is made of rope which is 50 meters long and 6-10 meters high and was built in 2015 connecting Sitio Chogan according to the officials of Brgy. Abuyo.
Apart from the hanging bridge, there is also a 30 meters overflow bridge in the said area, but because the river reached a little water, some students passed through the said bridge.
It was said that it was possible to cross by boat, but there was no boat at that time. Students wearing shoes went through the hanging bridge while students wearing slippers preferred to go through the overflow bridge.
According to PMaj. Glanery Cabeliza chief of Alfonso Castaneda police, some of the victims fell straight into the river, others to the ground. Three were rushed to the hospital in the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Cabanatuan City for CT scan that sustained severe injuries while all the others were taken to the RHU (rural health unit).
According to the PNP, the place of the incident is far away and is 30 to 45 minutes from the center of Alfonso Castaneda. Students and teachers went home first after they were examined at the health unit.
