Starting today, April 15, e-bikes, e-trikes, tricycles, “kuliglig” and pedicabs are prohibited from passing through the main road in Metro Manila. According to MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, starting today those who violate this will be arrested and fined.
Some e-bike drivers expressed fear that their living income would be affected, they would just take alternative routes if there are any, they will just hide rather than being arrested and pay for a fine that’s supposed to be for their families.
The MMDA clarified that e-vehicles and tricycles will still be allowed to cross the national roads as long as the intention is to cross the other side of the road. By order of the MMDA P2,500 will be fine for those who violated and their vehicles could be confiscated if it is not registered or the driver doesn’t have a license.
Major routes are: C1: Recto Avenue, C2: Pres. Quirino Avenue, C3: Araneta Avenue, C4: EDSA, C5: Katipunan/CP Garcia, C6: Southeast Metro Manila Expressway, R1: Roxas Boulevard, R2: Taft Avenue, R3: SLEX, R4: Shaw Boulevard, R5: Ortigas Avenue, R6: Magsaysay Blvd./Aurora Blvd., R7: Quezon Ave./Commonwealth Ave., R8: A. Bonifacio Ave., R9: Rizal Ave., R10: Del Pan/Marcos Highway/McArthur Highway, Elliptical Road, Mindanao Avenue, and Marcos Highway.
Artes said that the said law will be strictly implemented due to increasing number of accidents involving e-bikes, e-trikes, and e-scooters. Light electric vehicles are exempted traveling on bike lanes on covered roads in pursuant to Republic Act No. 11697 or Electric Vehicle Industry Act. While, tricycles are exempted if they are traveling no more than 500 meters on the major routes.
