BALUT AS WORST FILIPINO FOOD IN TASTEATLAS; SINIGANG, CHICKEN INASAL AMONG THE BEST

The international online publication TasteAtlas has named Filipino foods Sinigang and Chicken Inasal among the best Filipino foods for September. Meanwhile, balut took the spot for the worst rated Filipino food.
Sinigang rank 1st while Chicken Inasal rank 2nd , both garnered a 4.5 out of 5 ranking on the TasteAtlas’ Top 10 list. “With its sour lightness perfectly matching the harsh tropical heat of the country, sinigang is a unique soup that is a true representative of Filipino cuisine.”
Last August, Sinigang was also among its 50 best soups in the world and inasal na manok was one of its best chicken dishes worldwide in October 2022.
Sinigang is an often seen dish at special occasions that became more popular with new variations that used guava or raw mango and ingredients such as pork, fish, milkfish, shrimp, chicken or beef.
TasteAtlas noted that inasal na manok originated in Bacolod which became the signature dish of the entire Visayas region. “It employs various chicken cuts marinated in a mixture of vinegar and numerous spices such as lemongrass, garlic, and ginger.”
It added that the meat is brushed with the annatto-infused oil which provides the chicken with an appetizing golden color and a unique peppery flavor.
Among the other best Filipino dishes for the month of September were lechon, leche flan, bulalo, lumpiang shanghai, and tortang talong which scored 4.4. Sisig and adobo round out the Top 10 best Filipino food earning 4.2.
Worst rated Filipino food was balut with a rating of 2.7. “Balut is a popular, although unusual Filipino delicacy, served everywhere from street stalls to upscale restaurants. It is a duck egg that has been hard-boiled, fertilized, and incubated. Traditionally, the cooked embryo is consumed straight from the shell.”
Balut also got the worst rating among egg dishes with a score of 2.7 according to TasteAtlas in 2022.
Other worst rated Filipino foods include inipit (2.9 rating), pinipig (3.0), biko (3.0), kinalas (3.1), pinikpikan (3.2), suman (3.3), spamsilog (3.3), kilawin (3.3), and pochero (3.3).
