The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) recently arrested three hackers targeting various government agencies and banks. One of the hackers which was the data security officer of Manila Bulletin admitted that approximately 93 websites was hacked.
This is executed not by just a single person and not within a single year, this includes government and private company websites as well as servers based abroad. The hacker named “Kangkong” also revealed that he was able to access the website and system of Belo Medical Group.
Records of famous celebrities and personalities was hacked including their age, address, contact numbers, bank accounts/credit card, birthdays, and email addresses. The suspect answering why he did that, said that he was just curious.
The suspect said that he never sells any of the database in the medical aesthetic center, what he usually does is when he downloads it, he forgot it. He then revealed that he leaves specific picture on the compromised websites that he was involved.
Kangkong said, “Cybersecurity is not really a priority in the Philippines. They should invest in security. We know that hiring people is expensive, the tools needed are expensive. But they should invest somehow because if they don’t invest and they are breached, they would have to spend more.”
National Privacy Commissioner (NPC) John Henry Naga said that an investigation is now rolling on the alleged data breach, and companies should inform NPC and their clients within 72 hours if a data breach occurred.
According to Naga, if it is proven that the Belo Medical Group were actually breached and then they did not report to the NPC, there is an administrative fine and at the same time, there is also a criminal offense. Because medical procedure is a sensitive personal information.
