A total of 43,033 aspirants for national and local posts have filed their certificates of candidacy (COCs) during the filing period from October 1 to 8 according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
The aspirants also submit their certificates of nomination and certificates of acceptance of nomination (CON-CANs). Out of the more than 40,000 aspirants for the 2025 midterm polls, 33,652 or 78.20 percent are males while 9,381 (21 percent) are females according to Comelec chairperson George Garcia.
It said that the Senatorial aspirants that filed their COCs were 183, which is higher compared to the 153 filers in the 2019 midterm elections and to 176 aspirants in the 2022 polls. As of Friday, 66 senatorial aspirants are confirmed to be included in the official balot for Eleksyon 2025.
“66 hopefuls will be included in the list of legitimate, valid, and true candidates for next year’s elections,” Garcia said.
The poll body’s Law Department is expected to submit its proposed recommendations for aspirants who will be retained, removed, and be declared nuisance candidates for next year’s polls on October 23 (Wednesday).
Garcia said out of the 160 party-list groups that have filed their manifestation of intent to participate, 155 have submitted their CON-CANs.
“Because of this, there will only be 155 party-lists that will be included in the official ballots,” he added.
Comelec is now reviewing the list of aspirants for local and national posts to remove the nuisance candidates.
“All of them (nuisance candidates) will be cleared out until the end of November, and hopefully we should have the final list before December 13.”
In Cordillera region, provincial and city offices have transmitted 1,457 of COCs and CONA to the Comelec.
Meanwhile, the dealine for the filing of petitions against nuisance candidates has been extended, from October 14 (Monday) to October 16 (Wednesday).
