Four people were confirmed dead while 25 others were injured after a multiple vehicle collision on the northbound lane of Katipunan Avenue Flyover in Quezon City on Thursday evening.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. during rush hour as vehicles were heading downhill according to the Transport Management Department (TTMD). The crash involved 16 motorcycles, five four-wheeled vehicles, one bus, and a truck.
“The crash caused significant disruption, with debris scattered across the area and traffic completely halted,” the BFP said in a report.
Emergency responders, including the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims.
The authorities reported that the truck driver lost control and collided with a vehicle, which then sideswiped motorcycles on the side of the road. The fatalities include 3 men and one woman.
While the 26 others had sustained various degrees of injury, all injured victims were brought to different hospitals for medical treatment according to the Quezon City Police District (QCPD).
The truck driver left the scene after the accident out of fear, then rode a tricycle to escape. The QCPD said the suspect was captured along CP Garcia Avenue in a follow-up operation around 1:30 a.m.
According to the truck driver, this was the first time he was involved in an accident in his 5 years of working as a truck driver. “The truck suddenly lost the brakes. I ask for forgiveness from everyone involved in the accident. I didn’t like what happened.”
It took around 6 hours before the vehicles involved in the accident were cleared, allowing the northbound lane of the Aurora Blvd. flyover to reopen to motorists.
To avoid road accidents as Christmas approaches, motorists are reminded, “The battery needs to be in good condition, the oil and engine break. Let's avoid drinking this Christmas. Hands on the steering wheel, eyes on the road.”
