On February 25, 2024 (Sunday), the 38th 1986 EDSA Revolution, also known as the People Power Revolution, ended the dictatorship of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. Various groups across the country protested and walked along the streets.
These groups unified in messaging “no to charter change.”.
In Cebu City, along Osmeña Boulevard, jeepney modernization and the revision of the 1987 constitution are some of the issues youths and activists oppose during the commemoration of the EDSA Revolution.
Along Ayala Avenue in Makati City, hundreds of joggers, cyclists, and skaters joined together with yellow colors for an “EDSA Freedom Ride” with the message “EDSA is alive!”.
While in Quezon City along Ortigas Avenue, thousands of protesters gather around the EDSA Shrine on the anniversary of the revolution.
According to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) officer-in-charge, Ian Christopher Alfonso, even though the anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution was not listed as a holiday, Filipinos should still remember and honor the uprising that forced the ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and his family into exile.
As the EDSA revolution continued every time of the year, it taught people that no dictator or tyrant lasts in power. People power is not only EDSA; it continues to be a reality in this time as long as there is injustice, tyranny, and dictatorship, according to human rights group Karapatan.
