Transport group are still fighting and pushing their stands and rights on the apprehension of unconsolidated jeepneys. Samahang Manibela Mananakay at Nagkaisang Terminal ng Transportasyon announces a three-day “tigil-pasada” set for next week to protest again.
Unconsolidated public utility vehicles consolidation expired on its deadline April 30, considering their franchises revoked and will be considered colorum, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board earlier said.
Colorum vehicles that are still plying will be impounded, drivers will be ticketed, one year suspension of driver’s license, and a P50,000 penalty on the operator. The consolidation of PUVs is part of the initial stage of the government’s PUV Modernization Program (PUVMP).
To allow transport groups to modernize their vehicles, the House of Representatives transportation committee had urged the Department of Transportation to consider granting unconsolidated operators with one-year provisional authority according to Manibela Chairman Mar Valbuena.
P1.6 million to P2.8 million are the cost of a modern jeepney unit that a transport cooperative can acquire, which is much expensive than the group P900,000 cost on modernizing some of their jeepney units Valbuena said.
The report said that the group will also protest in front of the office of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
