A two-year-old girl died after being hit by a pick-up vehicle driven by their neighbor in Tondo, Manila, the Manila Police District (MPD) reported on Tuesday.
Based on the CCTV footage, children are seen playing on Masinop Street in Barangay 42 and the red pick-up that was about to leave. It can be seen that the car was moving backwards and forwards in the crowded road and a motorcycle moved first.
Until the young Jaiza walked from his grandfather's house towards the direction of the car. The child was about to cross the road when she was run over by the pick-up.
On the investigation of MPD, the driver may not have noticed the child especially since the car was high. "Based on our driver and it can be seen on the CCTV, this car is very tall, and the child is very small. This driver did not notice that the child was in front of the car and when he left, he ran over this child.”
Jaiza was immediately rushed to the hospital by the driver who ran over her but she was declared dead on arrival. Jaiza's family was depressed because the child was considered a miracle baby by their family.
According to the victim’s mother, “That corner is really a children's playground. She went to my dad's place to eat because our house is not far, this is not a highway for that to happen. When I came back my daughter was not alive. I admit that I was negligent because I left my child but I didn't want that to happen to my daughter. I just want justice for my child.”
Barangay 42 said that they are implementing a single lane in the area especially since some roads there are congested. “Usually those who enter here are motorbikes so there are no cars. This street, it's not really a road, there are few passers-by, only motorbikes and sidecars.”
The authorities advised motorists to be careful when driving on the narrow roads in the area and the residents that they must have a parking before they get a car.
The driver is under the custody of Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit and is facing a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
