Despite the intense summer, one or two typhoons are expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this May according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
There are two possible scenarios according to PAGASA weather specialist Rhea Torres, “the first scenario, it may approach our archipelago before it moves away from our country. The second scenario is if the typhoon's entry point is lower or it forms in the eastern section of Mindanao, it is possible that it will reach parts of Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, and some parts of Calabarzon before it exits the West Philippine Sea and will move away from our archipelago.”
Low Pressure Area (LPA) has not yet been monitored until next week, Pagasa said this does not mean that the rainy season will start, it is even possible that it will be delayed due to the effect of El Niño.
In addition to the aftereffects of El Niño, Pagasa had earlier issued a warning that the nation would still endure strong heat waves and high heat index levels throughout the summer, so some LGUs have decided to continue the existing face-to-face classes suspension.
Highest heat index in the country was 53°C recorded in Iba Zambales, and 48°C recorded in Pili, Camarines Sur and Catarman on Northern Samar. Due to the extreme heat, face-to-face classes are still suspended until tomorrow at all levels in Malabon, Manila, Navotas, and Pasay City.
