“ANY STORY, NO MATTER HOW GOOD IT IS, COMES TO AN END” - VICE PRESIDENT SARA DUTERTE

From Mayor to Vice President, two major positions were let go by Sara Zimmerman Duterte as she resigned from the Cabinet of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as education secretary and vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).
Inday Sara of Davao City
Commonly known as Inday Sara, have been in the politics for a long run, as the second child of the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Her family's extensive background in politics and public service provides a significant backdrop for her life.
She started as the Davao City’s vice mayor from 2007 to 2010, and decided to continue serving as the mayor of Davao City from 2010 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2022. Her leadership abilities and socio-political intelligence have been sharpened by the Duterte family's long history of public service and government service.
Sara briefly served as a court attorney in the Philippines Supreme Court in 2006 before entering politics. Duterte made history as she was the first-ever elected woman and the youngest vice mayor and mayor of Davao City.
Philippine’s Vice President
In 2022, as she takes a big step in serving not just the city of Davao but for the whole country. Sara ran for the vice presidency under Lakas-CMD as the running partner of Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. from the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas under the UniTeam Alliance.
The UniTeam on May 2022, Marcos won with 31.6 million votes while Duterte had over 32 million, they were the first tandem in Philippine history to win presidency and vice presidency.
After winning the vice presidency, Marcos announced that Duterte will join his cabinet as Secretary of Education although Duterte wanted to lead the Department of National Defense.
On a year in service, Duterte was designated as the co-vice chairperson of the NTF-ELCAC. Her appointment to the government agency occurs after she has been under fire for red-tagging on multiple points.
And then she resigns as chairperson of Lakas-CMD following significant controversies leaving the party after her close ally former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was demoted from her senior deputy speaker position in the House of Representatives.
Confidential Funds controversy
Year 2023, when the Commission on Audit (COA) revealed the 2022 budget of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) including the confidential funds spending P125 million in Duterte’s office within 11 days.
The House of Representatives declares that it would not grant the confidential funds that five government agencies including the OVP and the Department of Education, which are led by Duterte have asked for in their 2024 budgets.
DepEd proposed P150 million, while Duterte's office requested P500 million in confidential funds moves that drew intense criticism from the public and government as well. Former President Rodrigo Duterte, defends his daughter in the midst of the issue over the OVP's use of confidential funds. He referred to the House under Romualdez as the "most rotten institution" in the nation.
Despite Marcos' declaration that he is researching the possibility of the Philippines rejoining the International Criminal Court (ICC), Vice President Duterte dismissed any cracks within the UniTeam.
Sara Duterte quitting Marcos Cabinet
June 19, 2024, Duterte announces her resignation from the Marcos Cabinet as education secretary and vice chairperson of the NTF-ELCAC without disclosing the reason, but says that she will “remain of service to the country” through the Office of the Vice President.
She said that her choice was made "out of genuine concern for our teachers and Filipino youth," not because of any "weakness" on her behalf.
In her resignation letter to President Marcos, she stated to have already created a transition plan for each of the nine DepEd strands, as well as for positions chaired by the organization of Southeast Asian Ministers of Education and DepEd itself, the president of SEAMEO Council is Duterte.
“I shall remain of service to the country through the various programs, activities and projects of the Office of the Vice President. I thank you for the opportunity to have served as a member of your Cabinet,” she stated.
“But any story, no matter how good it is, has its own end. I tendered my resignation as Secretary of Education, effective July 19, 2024. Although I will not continue to manage the department, we will continue to promote the quality of education that Filipinos deserve,” Duterte said.
